Iron is an essential and integral element for the good health of the body, as it helps red blood cells to carry oxygen to the organs and muscles. Having desirable levels of iron in the body can help prevent iron deficiency (iron deficiency anemia) and iron-deficiency anemia.
The diet of children should be such that it provides the necessary nutrients for their proper development. Insufficient iron intake carries the risk of developing anemia.
Although iron is found in many foods, the amount of iron that is ultimately absorbed by the body is often much smaller than what is consumed from food. Reduced iron intake from the diet, as well as other factors such as bleeding or increased iron needs, can lead to a reduction in iron stores below normal levels, resulting in the development of iron-deficiency anemia.
Additionally, the absorption of iron can be affected by various dietary factors, such as the simultaneous consumption of calcium, tannins (e.g., tea, cocoa), magnesium, and dietary fiber, as well as pathological factors such as gastrointestinal diseases (e.g., celiac disease).
Iron deficiency (iron deficiency anemia) is the most common cause of anemia in babies and children, and it is estimated that 14% of children in Greece have iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency can cause various consequences in a child's body, and common symptoms include easy fatigue, pale appearance, inability to concentrate, dizziness, anorexia, and headaches.
It is also worth noting that during childhood, there are increased iron intake needs due to the growth rate of the body, as well as the fact that children become more selective with food. These factors can also lead to iron deficiency.
Iron deficiency is a condition that must be corrected immediately, and as a result, the doctor may need to prescribe an iron supplement while also enriching the child’s diet with iron-rich foods such as red meat, chicken, fish, and lentils, as well as foods that enhance iron absorption, such as fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C.
Finally, in cases of iron deficiency or iron-deficiency anemia, it is important to follow the doctor's instructions carefully in order to restore normal iron levels in the child's body properly and promptly.
